I got the great luck to see a really good matchup between Mexico and Malaysia in Olympic archery this morning.
Let me backtrack for a quick second and start by saying Lord's Cricket Ground was a great place to hold the event. I felt like I was sitting on the sideline and could see both the archers and the targets very well from my seat.
The cricket grounds facility itself served as an impressive backdrop.
Now back to Mexico and Malaysia.
It started out as a close match. Everyone was shooting the arrows into the 8, 9 and 10-point (bullseye) circles, except for one Malaysian arrow that landed in the 7-point circle.
Mexico staying comfortably ahead throughout the match, but it ended in a mad dash of bulls-eyes where the Mexican team was ahead by less than 10 points going into the final round of 3 arrows per team.
The Malaysia team members then did the unthinkable, eliciting 'Ooohhs' from the audience -- they shot three bulls-eyes in a row.
The stakes were really high then as the members of the Mexican team prepared to take their final three shots.
The first of the three Mexican team members shooting his own bulls-eye, which drew more 'Oooohhhs' from the audience.
The next Mexican archer's arrow landed in the 9-point ring.
It all came down to one last Mexican archer. If he could do it, his team advanced to the quarterfinals. He had been the person to get the most bulls-eyes in the match.
He only had to get it the 5-point ring to secure a win for his team.
His final arrow landed in the 9- point ring.
Mexico won and advanced to the next round, and the crowd went wild. Some people in the stands started waving a Mexican flag.
I couldn't hear the announcers when they said who the team would face next. I think it would have been France.
My only disappointment was that the archery round I got to see lasted only an hour and a half.
